The Ice Hotel, North America's Original Snow Village
The Inspiration:
The Hôtel de Glace & its wonderful events are inspired by the beautiful snow village of Jukkasjärvi, in Sweden. It all began in 1989, when an exhibition was held in the small town, created by Japanese artists specializing in ice sculptures. The following year, Jannot Derid – a French artist, also visited the same village of snow and held an ice sculpture exhibition of his own. This second event actually took place within an igloo, constructed especially for the event. As the number of visitors grew, people began to realize that there were not enough rooms available within the snowy village of Jukkasjärvi to accommodate them. A number of guests requested they be able to sleep within the exhibition room itself, a giant cylinder-shaped igloo. These visitors truly became the actual first guests of the “Hotel”, within their sleeping bags atop reindeer skins.

The Construction:
Made from the purest of all natural resources, it has been referred to as the “Nectar of the Gods” - water, in its solid state…ice, & this snow village has lots of it! Over 15,000 tons of snow & ice are used in the construction of the Ice Hotel each year. Now covering more than 3,000 square meters, complete with ceilings measuring 5.4 meters high, 36 rooms including themed suites, exterior spas, sauna, & the ongoing initiative to add new and exciting features every year means that this snow village is an ever-changing, unforgettable experience.

The Art:
Although the entire structure itself, created from various stainless steel moulds over a month period can easily be considered a work of art, the real beauty lies within. Inside of this snow village, visitors can find furniture, numerous sculptures hand-crafted by local artisans, walls, slides, drinking glasses & a bar counter…all made entirely from ice!

The Activities:
North America’s Original snowvillage includes a number of winter activities. Snow-shoeing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, dog-sledding & snowmobiling…just to name a few. Visitors can also find daily public tours, art exhibitions, various workshops, cocktail parties and much more.
